密苏里大学哥伦比亚分校是密苏里大学University of Missouri Columbia系统中的主校区，也是实力最为强大，名声最为显赫的校区，与同州另一私校圣路易斯华盛顿大学并称。同时，它也是34所公立美国大学协会AAU（Association of American Universities）的大学之一，是该州唯一一所同时兼为美国大学协会会员和卡内基高等教育基金会评出的“博士科研/横向研究型大学”。放眼全美，获得同等双料头衔的大学也不过三十余所，故素有“公立常春藤名校”的美誉。

密苏里大学哥伦比亚分校为西密西西比河(Mississippi)地区，历史最悠久的州立大学(the first public university west of the Mississippi River)，也是美国前总统汤玛士杰佛逊(Thomas Jefferson)在路易斯安那州(Louisiana)建立的第一所公立学校。密苏里大学（University of Missouri）系统的四个校区中，以哥伦比亚分校校区占地最广。密苏里大学哥伦比亚分校University of Missouri-Columbia (MU)共有 20 个系所与学院，提供多达250 种以上的学士学位课程与重点课程，尤其是农学院、工学院与传播学院的学术成就闻名全球。密苏里大学哥伦比亚分校University of Missouri-Columbia (MU)校内有完善的设施，如：计算机教室、图书馆、学生健康中心、数个展览馆、运动设备，如学生休闲中心、重量训练设备、游泳池、网球场与足球场。
